About Jeffrey Thoma
Attorney Jeffrey Thoma has built a stellar reputation as a knowledgeable and strong advocate for his clients in both the trial and appellate levels over the past 30 years. From his time as a Deputy Public Defender to his current private practice, Jeffrey Thoma has garnered an impressive record of success that makes him a notable asset to his clients.
After graduating from the University of San Diego School of Law, Thoma began his legal career in 1981 as a judicial law clerk for the District Court Judge James Brennan in Las Vegas. He quickly moved on to the Public Defender’s office in Clark County, Nevada, where he began to learn the inner workings of the criminal justice system as a Deputy Public Defender.
Much of Thoma’s early career was spent in the Public Defender’s office, juggling a heavy caseload and acquiring the legal acumen that would earn him a reputation as a shrewd and conscientious advocate. From Nevada he moved on to California, where he took a brief break from criminal defense and worked in private practice and at the District Attorney’s office in Humboldt County, California. These experiences gave Thoma an insightful perspective into the operations of the opposing side, which would prove useful when he ultimately returned to his calling and found his way back to the Public Defender’s office.
In 1990, Thoma began his seven-year tenure as a Deputy Public Defender in San Diego County, where he gained experience on capital murder cases, even arguing a special circumstance murder case before the California Supreme Court. It was here that Thoma became a leading authority on the subject of DNA technology.
Jeffrey Thoma served as Director of the Department of the Public Defender’s office in both Mendocino County and Solano County, California, from 1997 to 2004 and 2004 to 2010, respectively. He currently provides consulting services on forensic issues, particularly the subject of DNA evidence.
